steak > burger

So I got an email from a reader asking for "web help". Somewhere out there, an ex-husband had written something on his website, and she was asking me what could be done, if anything, to get what he wrote off the web. I took a look at the site, and all I found was a very vague reference that she had cheated on him, and this is apparently a Bad Thing. To be honest, I disagree.

If anything, it reflects poorly on him. Can someone please tell me why a woman has to be faithful to a man who isn't doing his job of satisfying her sexual needs? If his lovemaking skills were up to par, then she would not have had to go elsewhere to find satisfaction.

We've all heard the expression "why go out for burgers when you have steak at home". Apparently in this case, there was no steak at home.

All relationships are based on mutual happiness, and a marriage vow should be a formalization of something that is implicit, not a prison sentence. A woman is (or should be) faithful because she is satisfied and happy - not because of an oath.

If she cheated on him, then its his fault for being a poor lay. If he chooses to advertise that on his website, then not only is he bad in bed, but apparently not very bright either.

late term abortion

Just in, from the "I saw it coming a mile away" department, the US Supreme Court is about to reconsider the constitutionality of late term abortions. My prediction - partial birth abortions will be banned, and yet another woman's right will be taken away from them by the old men in charge of jesusland.

using in C#

Somone please tell me what is the point of having the "using" keyword in a language with automatic garbage collection. As far as I can tell, its sole raison d'etre is to compensate for the fact that C# users apparently suffer from malloc / free envy due to language grammar emasculation.

god hates women, episode 2

Note: This is an older post, but I moved it foward because it fits on better with my "god hates women" series.

Today's installment of "god hates women" is sponsored by jesus.

There are more than 100 identified strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), about 30 of which can be spread during sexual contact. Half of all sexually active women between 18 and 22 in the US are infected. Some of them cause genital warts, while more dangerous strains can cause anal cancer, vulvar cancer, head and neck cancers, nonmelanoma skin cancers, and most notably, cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women, and is the third leading killer of women wordwide, causing 9 deaths per 100,000.

On Oct 7th 2005, Merck confirmed that their new product GARDASIL, was 100% effective at preventing cervical pre-cancers and non-invasive cervical cancer associated with HPV in a study involving over 10,000 women.

In short, science has given us a vaccine against the cancer which is the #3 killer of women worldwide.

This should be good news. Unfortunately, the followers of jesus prefer that women die. Bridget Maher, of the Family Research Council, has been quoted in an article in the New Scientist as saying "Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a licence to engage in premarital sex". Apparently they seem to believe that their god would prefer women to run the risk of death than get laid.

Un. Be. Lieveable.

Katha Pollitt has a very, very, very good article on The Nation titled " Virginity or Death!" that I highly recommend reading.

god hates women, episode 1

TODAY'S installment of "god hates women" is brought to you by allah.

Just like America, Iran is a theocracy, which means that all laws are are essentially derived from the imaginary friends of the schizophrenic in power. This means that we can safely assume that any judgment handed down by the courts, is god's will. And apparently, its god's will that women be gang-raped. This is the only possible conclusion I can come to, after reading that a teenage girl that killed one of three men trying to gang-rape her and her niece was sentenced to death, and is to be publicly hanged.

The state-run daily Etemad reported that the clerical regime's judiciary has condemned an 18-year-old girl for killing a man who attempted to rape her.

The victim, identified as Nazanin, was attacked when only 17 by three men who attempted to rape her and her niece. In the scuffle that followed, Nazanin acted in self-defense which resulted in the death of one of the attackers. She testified in court: "“I only committed homicide while trying to defend myself and my niece. I had no intention of killing that man. At that moment I didn't know what to do because nobody came to help us."

Granted, we only have her word that it was self defence, she could have been lying right?

The murderous judges ignored Nazanin'’s testimony, the facts in the case and the testimony of eye-witnesses that corroborated her version of the incident, and condemned her to death. The assailants were reportedly members of the suppressive paramilitary Bassij force in the city of Karaj (west of Tehran).

Maybe not. But why let facts get in the way? And this is coming from a religion that professes to respect and honour their women.

jon stewart on cheney

So apparently Dick Cheney shot a 78 year old man in the face on Sunday. If you watch one clip, watch John Stewart's coverage of it.

Near tragedy over the weekend in south Texas Vice. Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a man during a quail run at a supportors ranch, making 78 year old Harry Widdington the first person shot by a sitting veep since Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton, of course was shot in a duel with Aaron Burr over issues of honour, integrity, and political maneouvering. Widdington was mistaken for a bird.

annelore james

Posting for a friend of mine, whose mom was just involved in a terrible accident.

Annelore James was driving on the Solomon Hochoy Highway on Sunday when she saw a car slam into one of the concrete pillars on the highway. She stopped to assist the driver, Wendell Deheart, 40, who was trapped inside the car bleeding profusely. As James was trying to pull him out of the vehicle, another car driven by Clyde Ramsir, 36, crashed into James. Her right leg was almost completely severed and she sustained a broken right arm and shoulder. James was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital where doctors amputated her leg. Yesterday her husband, well-known businessman and horse owner, Charles James, told Newsday that he was attending a function when his daughter Chantal, 28, told him what had happened.

To all of you who know me, this is my mother, Annelore James. She will turn 57 on March 11th. I am presently trying to raise money for her so that she will be able to get the best prosthetics they have. She lost her leg in the above accident last week Sunday while helping another. Its such a tragedy but the silver lining is that she is alive and recovering well. I ask that you can donate any little thing as everything will count.

libby passes the buck

The headlines today portend great things. If there is any hope for this country, Libby will flip.

Court papers released last week show that I. Lewis Libby was authorized to disclose the identity of a female CIA agent to media by "his superiors," in an effort to counteract her husband's charge that the Bush administration twisted intelligence on Iraq's nuclear weapons to justify the 2003 invasion, according to the report.

a step in the right direction

Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek, who oversees the University of Iowa in Iowa City, told a legislative committee he would treat possession of small amounts of marijuana like a traffic violation, allowing hundreds of students arrested each year to graduate without a criminal record.

britney !<3 baby seats

So the big news today is that Britney spears didn't use a car seat for her baby. To anyone talking about, discussing, otherwise wasting time with this crap, I have five words for you.

Who cares what Britney Spears does with her crotch dropping? Can someone please tell me why is this news?

Update: shows 598 registered news stories carrying this "story". It is a sad testament to the shallowness of our society that the maternal failings of one of our Eloi generates this much press. Just for reference, lets see what is "less important" than Britney and her baby.

Bush reveals details of 2002 terrorist plot - 423 related
Violence kills 38 in Pakistan - 543 related
Bush gives congress information about domestic spying - 388 related
US cancer deaths drop by 369 from 2002 to 2003 - 401 related
Russia to meet with Hamas to prevent tension escalations - 78 related

I really should stop reading the news - all it ever does is depress me.

This is hands down the coolest music I've listened to in a long long time. If you only download one album for the rest of your life, download this one.

Take a moment and check out a friend of mine who has her own blog. I guess sending some traffic her way is the least I can do since its apparently my fault! Maybe the extra traffic will encourage her to get off her ass and write more.

SP & RK - still waiting for yours!

C# vs C++

I have made my decision, and I am migrating to C# for Windows development. My friend Tim really likes the C# environment, and I value his opinion, so I am giving them both a fair shot. (I'm still editing code in emacs though, that will never change).

My main reservations about C# are that it is a relatively new and relatively untested language that is inextricably entwined with one particular platform. I have no problem learning new APIs, but a proprietary language is something completly different. I am concerned that I might end up investing a lot of time learning a language that is only applicable to one platform, and worse yet, may negatively impact my job opportunities. In the future it is possible that I will be unable to find employment because it has been too long since I used a real language. I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

I've had more than I can take of Microsoft's piss-poor implementation of C++, with its outdated embedded Hungarian notation, bizarrely and inconsistently named typedefs, broken STL implementation, byzantine collection of system classes, and an environment whose software development methodology favours platform tie-in at the expense of clean, reusable code.

The pain of learning C# happens once. The pain of dealing with HINSTANCE, LPVOID, LPSTR and their like is every day, and I simply don't want to do it anymore.

Words cannot describe this video. It is footage of various animals being skinned at a fur farm in China, obtained by Care for the Wild, International. It contains extremely graphic content, and illustrates animal cruelty in its highest form, as for the most part, the animals are still alive while they are being skinned. Some are still alive after their skin has been removed and their bodies have been tossed onto a truck for removal.

This story, and the accompanying video, will forever change the way you think about fur.

Update: The first video on the site does not work - it is not my site and I have no control over it, but I did send them an email, so perhaps they will resolve it. The 2nd video on their site does work, as do all the .pdf reports posted there.

Infidel cartoons

So some Dutch dude drew some cartoons which portray mohammed in a negative light, and all of a sudden, there is a whole bunch of outrage from muslim leaders all around the world. I went looking, and I couldn't find the cartoons, but finally I tracked down a place for them. Here you go.

Honestly, I don't see what the big fucking deal is, but then again, I don't pray six times a day to my imaginary friend either, so what do I know.

The sacrificial U-2

The Christian Science Monitor has an interesting story, about Bush and Blair collaborating to find an excuse to invade Iraq. Apparently one of their ideas was to paint an american U-2 spyplane in UN colours in the hope that Saddam would shoot it down, providing a pretext under which they could invade.

And in case you were wondering, the U-2 is not an unmanned aircraft, meaning that our glorious leader was actually considering killing his own pilots to justify his war. Thankfully, this didn't happen, but that it was even on the table is just sickening.

Naturally, this isn't news in the USA.

CBS just doesn't get it

So CBS wants to sell it's episodes directly to consumers, instead of going through a middleman like Apple. Understandable, every layer is a piece of your profits that you don't want to give up.

Unfortunately, they will only strenghten Apple's strangehold on online media, because the terms under which they are selling their product are so asinine that consumers will reject it. CBS will then look at ABC's sales figures, which will be far better than theirs, and will come to the mistaken conclusion that the differentiator is Apple, as opposed to their draconian DRM.

CBS wants to sell you episodes of Survivor for $1.99, but you will only be able to view them for 24 hours after you bought it. ABC on the other hand, through Apple, will let you watch the shows as often as you like, forever. (Well, at least until they change the TOS, which they reserve the right to do at any time, which is why I boycott DRM material, regardless of vendor).

I wonder which of the two evils consumers will chose?

Hungarian notation

I really wish people would drop this stupid shit once and for all. Especially if you're using an OO language - why the hell would you want to typecast by name a component which is polymorphous? Maybe Simonyi's ideas made sense 20 years ago, in C (which I still consider to be God's language), but its about the time you retards just let it the fuck go.

And what's the point in prefixing member components with crap like "m_"? Guess what, if you're coding in C#, everything is a member component now. The only reason you monkeys are doing this is because Microsoft, in an effort to differentiate itself from Java, encouraged the use of CamelCase for everything, making it impossible to differentiate between member functions and member variables, without the use of extraneous textual garbage.

I really, really hate reading sample code written by monkeys.

Why won't California seceed so I can go live there?

Frontline 2006: The Library

So apparently some school received a terrorist threat, which was found to have been mailed from a computer at the library. The Gestapo FBI tried to seize the libraries computers without a warrant.

And then an amazing thing happened.

But the library director, Kathy Glick-Weil, told the agents they could not take the machines unless they got a warrant first. Newton's mayor, David Cohen, backed Ms. Glick-Weil up.

Finally, someone gets it.

After a brief standoff, FBI officials relented and sought a warrant from a judge. Meanwhile, Ms. Glick-Weil allowed an FBI computer-forensics examiner to work with information-technology specialists at the library to narrow down which computers might have been used to send the threatening message. They determined that three computers were implicated in the alleged crime.

Late that evening, the FBI received a warrant to cart away the three computers. According to Mayor Cohen, the warrant allows the FBI to view only the threatening e-mail message and the messages sent immediately before and after that message.

This is how America should be. Security forces work in conjunction with the legal system, while protecting the rights of the citizens.

And just to got off the "ZOMG, terrists, new threat, bill of rights obsolete, blah blah blah, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit", here is one of my favourite quotes:

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin

Its all about the Benjamin. He foresaw and warned against this shit in 1759
