Crack

FOUND an interesting article on Alternet today, talking about the disparity between sentences served for possession of crack cocaine vs. other crimes. Here is the money quote:

People caught with the drug in 2004, the last year for which data is available, served an average of ten years in federal penitentiaries, while the average convict served 2.9 years for manslaughter, 3.1 years for assault and 5.4 years for sexual abuse.

Now lets just put aside for the moment the fact that there is no logic whatsoever to why it is perfectly acceptable to poison yourself with Alcohol and Cigarettes, but doing it with a Colombian plant extract is a crime.

What I want to know is why is it that killing someone, as in ending their life, gets you less than three years, but having the materials on hand to get yourself fucked up gets you ten.

alternet has the story - linky
